Island Challenge Trials
The Island Challenge Trials are small quests to set off by the various Trail Captains of each of the islands. These trials aren't about battling Pokemon but require for you to find items or complete knowledge tests. For example, Mallow requests you find four specific items while Kiawe asks you to find the difference between two things.
There are over four Trial Captains that set you on these quests.
Totem Pokemon
At the end of the trial. you will come across Totem Pokemon. These are more powerful versions of various Pokemon, larger than others of its species. When they battle, they will often summon ally Pokemon to take you on.
?? Island: Gumshoos Lush Jungle - Akala Island: Lurantis
Grand Trials
After the trail and defeating the Totem, then you will be able to face the Grand Trail. This Grand Trial has you battle against the kahuna of the island. If you defeat the Kahuna in battle, then you will be recognized as having cleared the trials and allowed to continue to the next island for trials.

However, in the Nintendo Treehouse stream, it was revealed that Hala is one of the strongest trainers on Melemele Island. He runs the festival that commemorates Melemele Island's guardian Tapu Koku. It was then confirmed that he was the Island Kahuna.
Z-Moves
Following on from Mega Evolution, Pokemon Sun and Moon introduces a whole new mechanic which once utilizes a ring on the trainers wrist. These are Z Moves. These moves are incredibly powerful moves and can only be used once per battle. The Z Ring is the item that activates it. with Z Crystals being needed to be held by the Pokemon in order for the moves to be activated. There is a Z Crystal for each type of Pokemon.
